Biography: Doris Callister was born in 1904. She was the daughter of a postman from Port Erin. During the First World War, her father was called up and served in the British army in France. With the main breadwinner away, money was in short supply and so Doris would knit socks for soldiers at home. She collected the wool at Noble's hospital and returned the finished socks there. Aged thirteen she left school, and began work at Emmett's sock factory in Douglas with her older sister. She remembered that on Armistice Day, work at the factory stopped. Many were cheering and singing - but others were crying. (Image ref: PG/13727).
